Urban Mining from E-Waste for a Sustainable Future

Research Rats

Problem Statement: The rapid increase in e-waste, particularly from mobile phones, leads to environmental pollution and unnecessary mining of rare earth metals. Despite the valuable materials embedded in discarded electronics, only a small percentage of e-waste is recycled due to a lack of awareness and convenient disposal solutions. Unsafe disposal practices, such as open burning or landfill dumping, further exacerbate environmental hazards.

Solution: The team proposes ‘Scrappy Bot,’ an automated robotic collection and segregation system for discarded mobile phones. Installed in public spaces, these reverse vending machines would allow users to deposit old phones, ensuring data security before processing. AI-driven identification segregates phones for optimized recycling, reducing dependence on raw material extraction while mitigating pollution from improper disposal. This solution not only promotes sustainable mining alternatives but also incentivizes responsible e-waste management, paving the way for a circular economy in electronics.

Leveraging Robotics to Handle the Force of Nature

Eureka Jr.

Problem Statement: Earthquakes cause significant destruction, with injuries often resulting from falling furniture and objects rather than structural collapses. According to studies, 65% of injuries in lower-magnitude earthquakes occur due to unsecured objects obstructing escape routes, particularly affecting people with mobility issues. Current earthquake safety measures, such as alerts and adhesives, either provide inadequate time for evacuation or are impractical for real-time disaster scenarios.

Solution: Eureka Jr. proposes a robotic system that utilizes electromagnets and predictive AI to stabilize furniture and heavy objects before tremors cause movement. The system integrates sensors to detect early seismic signals, activating electromagnetic locks that secure objects in place, thereby preventing injuries and property damage. This automated solution ensures safety with minimal human intervention, offering a crucial safeguard for individuals, especially those with disabilities, in earthquake-prone areas.
